Advancing PNG’s Next Generation of Industry Leaders

The Tookie Angus Memorial Scholarship is the Kainantu Endowment’s flagship postgraduate scholarship, established in honour of Mr. R. Stuart “Tookie” Angus, founding Chairman of K92 Mining Inc.

Created to strengthen advanced capability within Papua New Guinea, this scholarship supports Master’s degree studies in mining and business-related disciplines that contribute directly to sector development and long-term national progress.

This is a competitive, merit-based scholarship designed for individuals who demonstrate academic excellence and professional commitment.

Who the Scholarship Is For?

The Tookie Angus Memorial Scholarship is open to Papua New Guinea residents who meet one of the following pathways:

Final-year university students in mining or business-related disciplines progressing to postgraduate study
Qualified professionals holding a relevant Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years’ experience in a related field

Applicants must hold a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and demonstrate readiness for further study.

What the Scholarship Provides

The scholarship supports Master’s degree study for up to two years and includes:

Payment of approved tuition fees
Financial support for required learning materials
Approved travel and accommodation support for residential study components, where applicable

Recipients are expected to maintain satisfactory academic progress and meet the terms outlined in the formal scholarship agreement.

Selection Process

The Tookie Angus Memorial Scholarship is awarded through a structured and competitive assessment process.

Applications are reviewed against academic performance, professional experience, alignment with sector priorities, and the strength of the proposed research focus. Shortlisted applicants participate in interviews prior to final endorsement by the Kainantu Endowment Advisory Committee.

How These Scholarships Are Awarded

Scholarships in partnership are merit-based and institution-led.

Students are nominated and selected by their university or trade institution based on academic performance and demonstrated potential. Shortlisted candidates may then participate in an interview process prior to final confirmation.

These programs are delivered through formal partnership arrangements, ensuring alignment between academic institutions and industry while maintaining institutional independence in student selection. Applications are not submitted directly to the Endowment for these programs.

The number of scholarships awarded each year varies depending on program capacity and alignment with sector and workforce priorities.

Tertiary Scholarships

Tertiary scholarships support students in their final year of university study across disciplines aligned with industry and national development priorities, including:

Daisy Taylor Women in Mining Scholarship

The Daisy Taylor Scholarship recognises outstanding female students pursuing careers in mining and related professional disciplines.

This scholarship supports women demonstrating excellence across areas including:

• Metallurgy and geology

Trade Pathways

Trade scholarships support final-year students in technical and vocational training programs, helping develop practical skills aligned with workforce needs.

• Light Vehicle Mechanical
